What is Drop Everything and Read?

D.E.A.R. stands for "Drop Everything and Read".  It is a national celebration of reading designed to remind families to make reading a priority activity in their lives. National D.E.A.R. Day is celebrated every year on April 12th.  As part of our Special Education program, SAIL students have scheduled classroom reading time daily.  In addition, all classes participate in a collective weekly group lesson where they enjoy having stories read together.

What is a Mystery Reader?

Once a month, we invite a “Mystery Reader” from the community to our school.  We welcome all members of the community, including parents, relatives, business owners, the police and fire departments, and community leaders. Prior to the visit, students will be given hints about the mystery reader’s identity to add an element of excitement and increase anticipation. Students always enjoy a visitor and will be excited to unravel the mystery!

Reading to older students helps to increase their attention spans and inspire independant, quiet reading.
